Recipe cards in Kit emails
Recipe cards are the core of how dough connects your recipes to your Kit emails. The dough editor plugin adds a “Recipe Card” block type to Kit’s email editor, letting you insert a beautifully formatted recipe directly into any broadcast or sequence email.
How recipe cards work
When you install the dough plugin from the Kit App Store, a new Recipe Card block becomes available in Kit’s email editor. This block renders your recipe — including photo, title, ingredients, instructions, and a “Save This Recipe” button — as email-compatible HTML styled with your brand colors and fonts.
Recipe cards are not images or attachments. They are inline HTML content that renders natively in every major email client, including Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook, and iOS Mail.
Inserting a recipe card
- Open a broadcast or sequence email in Kit’s email editor.
- Click the + button to add a new content block.
- Select Recipe Card from the block list.
- Search your library — type a recipe name to search. You will see each recipe’s title, primary photo thumbnail, and cook time.
- Select a recipe to see a full preview of the card.
- Choose a display mode — Compact, Standard, or Full. See Display modes for details on each.
- Click Insert to add the card to your email.
After insertion, you can click the card block to reopen it and swap the recipe or change the display mode.
What is in a recipe card
Every recipe card includes:
- Primary photo — the first photo in your recipe, displayed at full width.
- Recipe title — in your brand’s heading font and primary color.
- Cook time and servings — displayed as badges.
- Save This Recipe button — a tracked call-to-action that tags subscribers and records engagement. See Save This Recipe.
Standard and Full modes include additional content. See Display modes for the complete breakdown.
Brand styling
Recipe cards automatically use your brand kit settings:
- Primary color — used for the “Save This Recipe” button background and heading text.
- Heading font — used for the recipe title. Loaded via Google Fonts when supported by the email client, with Georgia as the fallback.
- Body font — used for ingredients, instructions, and other body text. Falls back to Arial.
Email client compatibility
Recipe cards are tested and optimized for:
- iOS Mail
- Gmail (web and app)
- Outlook (2019 and newer, including web)
- Apple Mail
All styling is inline (no external CSS) and no JavaScript is used, ensuring maximum compatibility across email clients.
Empty library state
If you do not have any recipes in your library yet, the Recipe Card block shows a prompt: “Add your first recipe to dough to insert recipe cards.” with a link to your dough library.
Requirements
- Your Kit account must be connected to dough.
